The hidden pitfalls: how many are you aware of?

What I learnt from my time in banking, working with big corporations all over the world for over a decade, is that the system we find ourselves in isn’t always geared up to suit our best interests, particularly when it comes to health….

This matters all the more if you’re conceiving and growing a whole new person.

The changes the world has undergone in the last 50-100 years have been immense. Both good and bad. I mean for one would not be without my iPhone, WiFi, Uber and Instagram: life is easier now in so many ways. However, it doesn’t come without a cost….

The trouble is, the difficulties we face in this ‘new normal’ are often hidden - but - they are everywhere.

Here are just a few:

Whether or not you’re actively conscious of it, mentally we all feel the pressure to ‘do it all’; faster and better, all whilst being bombarded by images of everyone else doing it ‘perfectly’. Not exactly a recipe for stress free easy living… or feeling good about yourself.

Then there are the physical stressors: having less sleep, operating faster, working out harder, and, thanks to our modern technologies, ‘always being on’.

There are the hidden toxins in our food and air; the artificial hormones, steroids and antibiotics in our meat and fish. There are the pesticides, herbicides and GMO technology that are now rife throughout our food chain. All to feed our vastly expanded population.

There are the synthetic ingredients, preservatives and new food technologies that satisfy our desire for newness, for convenience and for food that fits into our busy lives. There are the artificial sweeteners and ‘free-from’ substitutes that we have created to try and correct the imbalances we are experiencing. ‘Healthy’ substitutes which are often highly misguided but which the marketing machines have gotten very good at promoting - even to the savvier customer.

Then there are the plastics, the hormone-disrupting chemicals, many untested additives in our personal care items not to mention the prescription drugs given to us to help us feel more normal when our bodies break down as a result of this onslaught. Our doctors are under resourced and medicine is often geared to treating symptoms when they arise rather than stopping symptoms arising in the first place. It's often easier and quicker to give a pill to take the symptom away than to correct the reason why we have a problem in the first place. Ironically in some cases this masks the symptoms and only further worsens the underlying issue.

Finally there are the corporations (pharma, food and agrochemical) who are under ever greater pressure from the stock market to post bigger profits quarter after quarter. All looking to find new ways to push their products on to us. Particularly in the food industry - times are far more competitive thanks to the likes of Instagram allowing any of us to bypass the old system and launch a cool and niche brand. The big guys are upping their game with all sorts of weird ‘new’ concoctions - taking us ever further away from ‘real food’.

None of these factors help us have healthy babies.

I totally understand how reading things like this can seem pretty depressing as it feels like a losing battle trying to ‘fight’ all these factors that are frankly everywhere.

If I have learnt one thing it is this:

Awareness is the key. Once you understand what the real pitfalls are you can start to do something about it. For me, awareness came through two years of obsessively trawling through medical and scientific journals and resources as well as talking to some of the foremost experts in each field.

I have also learnt that some of these factors have become so ‘normal’ you may not have considered them as risks, however, there is SO much you can do to put yourself in a better position. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to be difficult, expensive or time consuming either. Knowledge in this case truly is power.

This site has one intention and one intention only: to identify and bring awareness to the real (but often less publisised) risks to our ability to have a healthy baby. It is to provide you with ways to avoid or to do things better. All backed by science. After that it is up to you.
